As the production alias of Jim Richard, Sputnik One's music centres around weighty, percussive sounds. The Dublin based artist's songs are driving, tactile and textured, often a patchwork of samples contorted into irregular sequences, punctuated by precise machine rhythms.
S1’s discography is now four releases deep, the latest being a flawless four-tracker of mutant dancefloor gear that draws on broken UK techno, psychedelic tribal, footwork and ravey post-hardcore on Wisdom Teeth. The record builds on the energy of his last three 12”s with uniquely voiced and refreshingly forward-thinking bass-heavy club tracks at a range of tempos, all unified by a distinct sonic palette that pits glossy digital synths against raw organic samples and found sounds.
As a DJ Sputnik One’s sets cover a lot of ground, weaving a thread through broken-beat, techno, jungle and beyond. This has been demonstrated in club sets across Europe and the UK, performances on various Irish festival stages and in feature mixes for NTS and Rinse. Sputnik One has embedded himself into Dublin's emerging bass-focused landscape, as a resident and co-runner of the club night and label Woozy.
